Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care Is Important for Kids: Here's Why

What is Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care?

Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care, or the Blair Chiropractic Technique, is a non-traditional form of chiropractic treatment that specifically focuses on the health of the upper cervical spine. This method employs a more holistic approach to treating common ailments, restoring misalignments in the upper cervical spine to treat everyday illnesses.

How the Upper Cervical Spine Affects Kids' Health

The spine is the trunk of the body, providing stability to the head whilst also providing a protective framework for the spinal cord and central nervous system (CNS. Even small issues in the upper cervical spine can have a knock-on effect throughout the body, triggering a cascade of secondary skeletal, nerve, or muscle conditions if not addressed.

Keeping your child’s spine in good health is particularly important during their developmental years. Maintaining frequent upper cervical chiropractic check-ups and encouraging good posture and an active lifestyle will ensure your child’s upper cervical spine remains strong and healthy.

When Do Kids Need Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care?

Upper cervical chiropractic treatment is a non-invasive, drug-free treatment option for a wide range of ailments, making it a particularly useful treatment for kids. The primary reason for children to visit an upper cervical chiropractor is usually to treat developmental issues with the spine. Some of these conditions include scoliosis or lordosis.

That being said, upper cervical chiropractic treatment isn’t limited to spinal issues. If your child is experiencing frequent yet seemingly unexplainable headaches, back pain, neck pain, and muscle soreness, you should consider seeking upper cervical chiropractic care.

How Our Treatment Works For Kids

Dr. Gordon Elder is an expert practitioner of the Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractic Technique and has an abundance of experience in treating upper cervical spinal issues in children.

When treating a child for upper cervical chiropractic problems, Dr. Elder employs a two-step approach. Generally, your child will attend a 25–30-minute consultation. During this time, Dr. Elder will ask you and your child a series of questions in relation to any current health concerns; this will help Dr. Elder gain a better understanding of your child’s medical history and will allow for Dr. Elder to determine whether a vertebral misalignment could be triggering their condition.

Following your initial consult, Dr. Elder will provide you and your child with a breakdown of the diagnosis, the prognosis, and an overall treatment plan. During this time, your child will be able to ask Dr. Elder any questions that they may have in relation to their treatment. In order to accurately form a diagnosis, advanced 3-D imaging techniques will often be used in order to determine the exact location of any misalignments.

During the first treatment, Dr. Elder will perform a series of gentle and precise corrections that push the vertebrae back into alignment. While this process sounds painful, it is generally completely painless. Dr. Elder never performs any adjustments that require harsh twisting, popping, or cracking of the upper cervical spine.

Be aware that your child will need to return for frequent check-ups (for at least 3- 5 months) to ensure their adjustment is taking hold. Most patients average between 10 and 15 appointments with Dr. Elder to achieve long-lasting/permanent results.
